How to use the typing tutor

  1. Pick a chapter on the left — start with "Home Row" if you're new.
  2. Choose a difficulty — Beginner uses shorter text, Hard repeats it for a longer drill.
  3. Click the text area or just start typing. The cursor highlights the next character; the visual keyboard shows the next key and which finger to use.
  4. Earn 1–3 stars per lesson based on WPM × accuracy. Build a combo by typing without errors. Climb levels as your total points grow.

Your best WPM, accuracy and stars per lesson are saved automatically to your browser's local storage. Use the "Reset progress" button to start over.

WPM and accuracy — how they're measured

WPM (Words Per Minute) treats every 5 correct characters as one "word":

WPM = (correct characters / 5) ÷ (elapsed minutes)
Accuracy = correct characters ÷ (correct + incorrect) × 100%

Backspace lets you fix a slip, but the underlying error is still counted — accuracy reflects every keystroke, not just the final result.

Tips for faster, more accurate typing

  • Don't look at the keys. The whole point is muscle memory; looking down resets the clock on building it.
  • Hands on the home row. Index fingers feel the bumps on F and J; every other key is a short reach from there.
  • Accuracy first, speed second. Slow down to hit 95%+, then speed naturally follows.
  • Short, frequent sessions. Ten focused minutes a day beats one long weekly session.

FAQ

Is my data shared anywhere?

No. All scores, badges and settings are stored in your browser only (localStorage); nothing is uploaded.

Why is my WPM lower than other typing tests show?

Most tests count "net WPM" — corrected errors don't penalise. This tutor uses gross WPM during the run, then computes accuracy and stars from total errors. Compare the same test on the same site for an apples-to-apples view.

Can I use this on a phone?

Yes — the lesson display and stats work on mobile, though the visual keyboard is most useful on a real physical keyboard. Tablets with hardware keyboards work great.
