How it's calculated
Floor area = Length × Width
Tile area = Tile length × Tile width
Tiles needed = ceil(Floor area ÷ Tile area) × (1 + waste %)
The calculator rounds up to whole tiles and again applies the waste percentage on top — this matches how tilers actually order. Save the offcuts in case of future repairs; once a batch is sold out, exact colour matches are usually impossible.
Common tile sizes
| Size (mm) | Tiles per m² | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| 300 × 300 | ~11.1 | Bathrooms, kitchens |
| 600 × 600 | ~2.78 | Living rooms, bedrooms |
| 800 × 800 | ~1.56 | Large halls, lobbies |
| 600 × 1200 | ~1.39 | Modern open spaces |
| 1200 × 1800 | ~0.46 | Premium / showroom floors |
FAQ
Does this account for grout?
Yes — floor-area-divided-by-tile-area effectively assumes 0 mm joints, but the waste percentage covers minor losses including grout-line cuts. For very wide grout joints (5 mm+), reduce the effective tile coverage by ~2–3%.
Should I add tiles for skirting / wall?
Skirting tiles are usually counted separately (linear metres × tile height). For wall tiling, use this calculator with wall length / height instead of room dimensions.
