Why convert dates to Roman?
Roman numeral dates are popular for memorial tattoos, gravestones, statue cornerstones, movie copyright lines (which still use them — e.g., MMXXVI), and old buildings. They also appear on watch dials, where the year is sometimes engraved in Roman.
Examples
- 1 January 2000 → I·I·MM
- 4 July 1776 → IV·VII·MDCCLXXVI
- 15 August 1947 → XV·VIII·MCMXLVII
- 31 December 2099 → XXXI·XII·MMXCIX
FAQ
Years before 1?
Roman numerals only represent positive integers. For BC dates use the regular numeral with a "BC" suffix.
Year over 3999?
The standard letter set tops out at 3999 (MMMCMXCIX). For very large years some sources use overlines (e.g. V̄ = 5000), but that's outside the standard form this calculator produces.
