🇮🇳India

  • BIS IS-2888 standard for toilet/laundry soap quality. Drugs & Cosmetics Act 1940 Schedule M compliance for cosmetic soap manufacturing licence (state FDA).

  • FDA MoCRA cosmetic-facility registration mandatory (in effect from 2023) for any soap making cosmetic claims (moisturising, deodorising). Pure cleansing soap exempt.
  • State cosmetics-manufacturer licence (CA, FL, MD etc.). FPLA labelling rules — net weight, ingredients in INCI order.

⚠️Risks & mitigation

  • Oil price spikes (palm, coconut, olive): Hedge by stocking 3-month inventory at harvest time; switch between oil blends seasonally.
  • Lye (NaOH/KOH) handling: Strict PPE protocol — goggles, gloves, exhaust fan. Insurance against workplace injury is cheap and worth it.
  • Fragrance allergy claims: Use IFRA-compliant fragrance oils only. Patch-test claim language and keep CPSR/safety reports on file.
  • Big-brand price competition: Don't compete on price — sell on natural / artisan / chemical-free positioning at 2–3× supermarket pricing.

💰Funding & support programs

🇮🇳India

  • KVIC PMEGP: 15–35% margin-money grant (35% in rural + SC/ST/women/NE) on project up to ₹25L manufacturing.
  • MUDRA Shishu / Kishore: ₹50k–5L collateral-free at 8–12% interest.
  • Stand-Up India: ₹10L–1Cr for SC/ST/women entrepreneurs.
  • NSIC Raw Material Assistance: credit-backed bulk oil/lye purchasing.

🇺🇸USA

  • SBA Microloan: up to $50k for equipment + working capital via nonprofit intermediaries.
  • Kiva US: 0% interest crowdfunded loans up to $15k for women & minority founders.
  • State cottage-industry grants: NY Empire State Development, CA IBank.

🇬🇧UK

FAQ

Do I need an FDA / cosmetic licence to sell soap in India?

If you market it as pure cleansing soap, BIS IS-2888 self-certification is enough. If you make any cosmetic claim (moisturising, anti-acne, fairness) you need a state FDA Drugs & Cosmetics Act manufacturing licence under Schedule M.

Cold-process vs melt-and-pour — which is more profitable?

Cold-process has 60–70% gross margins but requires 4–6 week curing and a real workshop. Melt-and-pour is 30–40% margin but zero curing and you can start from a kitchen — better cash-flow for beginners.

What's a realistic break-even with PMEGP subsidy?

For ₹2.9L capex and 25% margin money, effective investment is ~₹2.2L. At ₹35k/month net profit, break-even is 6–8 months. Without subsidy, 10–14 months is typical.

Can I sell on Amazon / Flipkart / Etsy?

Yes — Amazon India requires GST + FSSAI-equivalent self-declaration (not FSSAI for non-edible). Etsy lets you sell globally but you need a UK/EU Responsible Person if shipping to UK/EU buyers.

How much space do I need?

200 bars/day fits comfortably in a 150–250 sqft workshop with a separate curing rack area. Ventilation for lye fumes is mandatory — a window + exhaust fan is the minimum.
