Minimum Average Balance (MAB) penalty calculator

Your savings account must hold an average balance above a threshold set by the bank (₹1,000–₹10,000 typically; SBI has discontinued MAB on savings since 2020). Falling below triggers a penalty that scales with how short you fell.

How banks compute MAB penalty

  • Tiered: HDFC, ICICI, Axis — penalty rises with how much you fell short (e.g., 50%+ short = ₹450–600 + GST; 25% short = ₹250–350).
  • Pro-rata: Kotak charges roughly 1% of the shortfall amount, capped.
  • Flat: Some PSBs (small accounts) charge a fixed ₹100–150 per month regardless.
  • RBI capped MAB penalties at the cost-of-providing-the-service in 2014, but actual amounts vary widely.

The easiest avoidance: keep a slightly higher MAB cushion or shift to a no-MAB account (SBI Regular Savings, BSBDA, salary accounts, digital banks).
