Heat pump COP calculator

COP = Heat output ÷ Electric input. A COP of 3.5 means 1 kWh of electricity delivers 3.5 kWh of heat — making heat pumps the cheapest space heating in most climates.

Reference

  • Air-source heat pump SCOP: 2.5–4.0 depending on climate.
  • Ground-source / geothermal SCOP: 4.0–5.0 — stable underground temperature.
  • Electric resistance heater COP: 1.0 by definition.
  • Modern condensing gas boiler: 90–95% efficient.
  • COP drops in extreme cold (< −10°C); many heat pumps add electric backup for that.
