🎒3 · High-altitude packing checklist
Weather in Ladakh can flip within the hour — warm layers and a raincoat are non-negotiable even in July. Tick items as you pack; your progress saves automatically in this browser.
Permits you need
| Traveller | Permit | Where | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian citizens | Inner Line Permit (ILP) — covers Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri, Hanle, Umling La | Online (lahdclehpermit portal) or DC office Leh | ~₹400–600 incl. environment fee |
| Foreign nationals | Protected Area Permit (PAP) — min. 2 people, via registered agent | Travel agents in Leh | ~₹700 + agent fee |
| All bikers | Rented bikes must be Ladakh-registered for local sightseeing zones | Rental shops in Leh | Included in rent |
Carry 10–15 photocopies of the permit + your ID — checkpoints at Khardung La, Chang La, and route junctions each collect one.
Altitude & acclimatization
| Place | Altitude | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Leh | 3,500 m | Rest 24–48 h on arrival if you flew in. No showers day 1, hydrate 4L+/day. |
| Khardung La | 5,359 m | Gateway to Nubra. Don't linger more than 20–30 min at the top. |
| Nubra Valley (Hunder) | 3,050 m | Lower than Leh — good second stop, sleep low. |
| Pangong Tso | 4,250 m | Cold nights even in summer (−5°C). Book heated camps. |
| Hanle | 4,500 m | Dark-sky reserve — India's best stargazing. |
| Umling La | 5,799 m | World's highest motorable road. Attempt only after full acclimatization, start early, carry oxygen can. |
- Golden rule: climb high, sleep low. Never sleep at a higher altitude than the previous night + 500 m once above 3,500 m.
- AMS symptoms (headache, nausea, breathlessness at rest) — descend immediately; don't push through.
- Avoid altitude medication (Diamox etc.) without consulting your doctor first.
- No alcohol for the first 48 hours; it masks AMS symptoms and dehydrates.
Best season
| Months | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-May – June | Very good | Passes freshly open, snow walls on Khardung La, fewer crowds early on. |
| July – August | Peak | Warmest days, everything open. Crowds + Manali-route landslides in monsoon. August is the classic expedition month. |
| September | Best overall | Crystal air, golden poplars, thin crowds, stable weather. |
| October | Closing window | Cold sets in; Manali route usually shuts mid-Oct. |
| Nov – April | Experts only | Fly-in only. Chadar trek + snow-leopard season; extreme cold (−20°C). |
FAQ
How many days do I really need?
Minimum 7 if you fly to Leh (2 acclimatization + Nubra + Pangong). The full road expedition from Delhi via Manali or Srinagar wants 12–16 days. 16 days covers Leh, Nubra, Pangong, Hanle and Umling La without rushing — the itinerary builder above adapts to your leave.
Bike or car?
The bike is the experience — but be honest about your riding fitness at 5,000 m+. Renting in Leh (~₹1,800–2,500/day for a RE Himalayan) skips the brutal Delhi–Leh highway miles. A self-drive or taxi circuit sees the same places in more comfort and is the smart choice with kids or parents.
Is fuel available on the circuit?
Petrol pumps exist at Leh, Karu, Diskit and Tangtse but distances are long — top up at every pump and carry 5–10 L spare for the Hanle / Umling La leg. The nearest pump to Umling La is at Hanle (limited stock) so plan from Karu.
Will my phone work?
Only postpaid SIMs work in Ladakh (prepaid from outside J&K/Ladakh is blocked). Jio and Airtel postpaid cover Leh, Nubra and Pangong patchily; BSNL reaches furthest into Changthang. Download offline maps before you go.
Is Umling La open to tourists?
Yes, with your ILP covering Hanle/Umling La. It's the world's highest motorable road at 5,799 m — higher than Everest Base Camp. Attempt it only after a week of acclimatization, start from Hanle at dawn, and turn back if weather closes in.
Does the checklist save?
Yes — ticks are stored in your browser's local storage and survive refreshes on the same device. Nothing is sent to a server.
